Counseling Philosophy
You are the expert on yourself, and on your situation.
You are reponsible for your life, your safety, your health, and your
actions.
Only you can decide your values, your goals, and which actions
you will take.
Your past history may affect your thinking, feeling and behaviors,
but whatever that past, the question is always "Now
what?"
You may learn about why you are the way you are, but the focus of this
counseling will necessarily be on your thinking, your feelings, your self-talk,
and what you will do about the current challenges in your life.
The counselor's job, among other things, is to:
learn and reflect back to you your value as a person.
help you to notice your thinking and how it affects feelings and actions.
teach you how to replace negative thinking with more positive, accurate, or
balanced statements to yourself.
support your perspective on your problems.
suggest other or expanded ways of looking at them.
separate the problems so that they can each be dealt with.
help you understand your options.
help you with your decision-making process.
work with you to identify possible consequences of your choices.
plan with you the steps you will take to achieve your goals.
support you in taking those first steps.
reflect back to you the progress you are making and encourage you to take
credit for your efforts to change yourself and/or your situation.
Humor is one of the few saving graces I know of !
