Your Place for Online Counseling Help!

GREETINGS!

DAVID SHANNON, MSW, LICSW

I have been providing online counseling services since 2000.  I also have much face-to-face  psychotherapy experience over more than three decades.  I consider it a privilege to be able to get to know and help my GLBT brothers and sisters in this way.

My website was badly in need of updating and redesign.  So I have moved it here to Network Solutions, and I am using their online design program to set up the new pages.  It will take me a while to get used to how that works, and to get everything up and running.  This temporary page will give a little basic information, and provide you with my email address to ask questions and request full details.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

Counseling sessions happen at a specific pre-arranged time, usually the same time every week.  They are done utilizing regular IM chat, which enables real time exchange of information and ideas.  Answering questions by email has not proved very satisfactory, but if that is preferred, special arrangements can be made.

WHAT ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY?

Talking on the internet is potentially not as secure as face-to-face in a closed-door office would be.  Any information on a hard disc can be retrieved, even if it has been erased.  So far there have been no problems with confidentiality, and I do not expect there to be any in the future.

WHAT DOES THIS COST?

Fees are based on a sliding scale, that is well below market rates for face-to-face psychotherapy.  You are encouraged to help set your fee, based on what you can reasonably afford, with some effort.  Insurance will probably not cover this service.  Most clients pay on their credit card through PayPal.

WHAT ARE THE THERAPIST'S CREDENTIALS?

I have a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Minnesota.  I am licensed by the state of Minnesota, USA, as a clinical social worker (LICSW).  I am a member of the National Association of Social Workers.  In 1971, I helped start a gay counseling service in Boston, the first of its kind in the country.  I have maintained an interest in gay counseling and have enjoyed working with GLBT clients since then.  My jobs have been in social service agencies, community mental health centers, private clinics and individual private practice.  I was Client Services Director for a time at an AIDS project in Boulder, Colorado.

IMPORTANT!  It is impossible for me to manage a crisis situation from a distance.  If you are currently going through a serious crisis, particularly if you think you might harm yourself or others, I urge you to do one or more of the following:

Call a current or former therapist or counselor.

Call a crisis or suicide prevention hotline.

Go to your local hospital emergency room.
